1.4 Three of Them
Ignatius Quill planned for one child and had a small nursery carved out for him or her on the second floor of the modest house he shared with his wife.
The triplets changed his plans.
One of the large gardening rooms had to be stripped of all its potted plants to make room for a nursery large enough to accommodate three babies... and our man Igs here could not be happier.
Cinnamon Quill, as usual, is a different story.
From the moment they were born, she resented her babies. Why did there have to be three of them? Why did the universe have to kick her around like this?
"It's a blessing," Ignatius sighed. "You'll see."
"They are always crying," Cinnamon snarled.
"They won't stay tiny forever."
"That's easy for you to say. You get to leave the house when you're expected to go to work and be productive. I'm expected to come running in every time there's a noise on the baby monitor."
"We could hire someone-"
"I don't want some IDIOT in our house doing who knows what when I'm not looking!"
So that was that. There would be no help. There would only be resentment.
Sometimes it seemed like Sophie cared more about the babies than their mother did.
Cinnamon's energy for nurturing was obviously... elsewhere.
Ignatius often returned home from work to find the triplets all screaming, with empty bellies and soiled diapers, and couldn't be certain if they'd had any attention since he left the house earlier.
After what seemed like such a short time, the babies were toddlers, and eager to spend time out of their cribs.
Glycerine, named after the song on the delivery room nurse's ringtone, inherited her father's dark hair and odd bluish highlights.
Tilde, the most active and impulsive, was the one of the three most likely to escape the nursery and go tumbling down the stairs. Her father worried about that a lot.
And Jym... the only boy. Ignatius supposed Cinnamon simply ran out of inspiration. But she still wouldn't go for his lame suggestion of Jim. Nope, she had to throw a Y in there to upset people.
While the family dynamics strain, the financial situation steadily improves.
The Quills finally have enough cash to get rid of that striped wallpaper.

Ugh, Cinnamon’s attitude is making me sad. Poor kids :(
ReplyDeleteEven autocorrect is upset with Jym’s name. At least he looks cute, but Tilde is my fave so far!
Tilde is my favorite too. Don't tell the others!
DeleteThat's a lot of babies for someone who doesn't care much for babies..
ReplyDeleteI actually really liked the striped wallpaper! :(
Awwr. The wallpaper wasn't meshing with Cinnamon's tastes, sadly.
